MENTORED HUNTS
Mentors are experienced hunters who have a wealth of knowledge that they are willing to share. Mentors volunteer their time to show newcomers how to prepare for the hunt as well as assist them during the hunt.
What is all involved?
During mentored waterfowl hunts, participants take part in a safety and familiarization exercise This includes a firearm safety review and practice shooting with the guns that will be used for the hunt. Responsibilities and ethics of hunters are discussed and appropriate hunting regulations are reviewed. Bird identification, calling and setting decoys are also a major part of the experience. After the hunt, the participants learn how to clean the birds. A tasty lunch, usually barbequed duck or goose, ends the event.
During mentored deer hunts, new hunters, ages 12+ learn various deer hunting techniques t a pre-hunt workshop. Presentations by Conservation Officers, firearm safety instructors and experienced hunters will prepare the participants for an actual deer hunt. Hand-on live firing of muzzleloaders or rifles, depending on the season, will ensure the participants are safe and familiar with a firearm prior to the hunt. Any deer harvested will be cleaned and skinned at the hunt event. Successful participants will be required to process their own meat.
During mentored wild turkey hunts, participants take part in a safety and familiarization exercise This includes a firearm safety review and practice shooting with the guns that will be used for the hunt. Responsibilities and ethics of hunters are discussed and appropriate hunting regulations are reviewed. Bird identification, calling and setting decoys are also a major part of the experience. After the hunt, the participants learn how to clean the birds.
Participants must have completed the Manitoba Hunter Education Course prior to the event and purchase appropriate licences.
Mentors are experienced hunters willing to share their knowledge and time with a new hunter. Mentors are screened by criminal background checks, child abuse registry checks and wildlife infraction checks.
