Manitoba Recreational Fishing League

Manitoba

Manitoba's Recreational Fishing League is a non-profit group who's goal is to introduce youth to fishing through an organized league similar to hockey, baseball or other recreational activities. These young energetic people, supported by their local communities, will learn the skills of fishing and hopefully leave with a better understanding of the environment around them.

Mission Statement ...

To create an environment where participants can compete in a fair and enjoyable manner that promotes sportsmanship, fair play and education.

Introduction ...

Angling opportunities, and thus angling quality, is diverse in Manitoba. Therefore, it is important to develop a set of rules to govern competition that will place teams on an "equal playing field". That is, a team in Shilo will be competitive with a team from Swan River or Lac du Bonnet where anglers feel that fishing may be superior. The rules are also designed to encourage participation by young anglers at all skill levels.

The 2010 season of the Manitoba Recreational Fishing League started May 24 and ended July 3. Again this year Teams battled with the rain and high water to get their lines in the water and reel in their fish safely. It is my pleasure to announce this year's Top Fishheads! With a total team score of 13,946 and over 90 fish caught, the Fishheads for 2010 are:

DAUPHIN WALLEYE WACKERS

Congratulations to Chance, Garrett, Victor, Thomas, Brock, Brody, Jacob and Carter on an outstanding number of fish caught. A big round of applause also goes out to the coaches of the Dauphin Walleye Wackers! Excellent job! Honourable mention goes to Rivers Mad Anglers in second place with a score of 11,938 and the Russell Castaways in third place with a score of 11,872. Russell caught six different species of fish during the season, and added a bonus of 500 points to their team score.

Congratulations to all teams who participated. Click here for a complete list of the final team standings. This year's MVP, the team member who scored the highest individual score, is:

Chance Simpson Dauphin Walleye Wackers

Chance accumulated a score of 3,162 by catching 20 fish. Way to go Chance! In second place was Jacob Heapy (Rivers Mad Anglers) with a score of 2,911 and in third was Garrett Gilroy (Dauphin Walleye Wackers) with a score of 2,508.

Hudson Reichert and Ethan Gow, (Lac du Bonnet Bite Club), both caught Master Angler sized white bass of 39cm and 39.5cm respectively. Click here for a complete list of the final individual standings.

Thank you to all who supported the Fishing League this year. Without the volunteer coaches, volunteer coordinators, sponsors, and steering committee providing youth with these great fishing experiences, the League would not be possible. Your dedication and time on behalf of the kids is most appreciated.

I hope to see everyone return in 2011. Watch for the registration package to be posted on the website and mailed or e-mailed to past participants during the late winter.

Remember to keep your rods in the water and practice those fishing skills! See you in 2011!
